Wonderful though ‘Ballet Shoes’ is, there’s so much more to Noel. ![]() The stories were found after Donna Coonan, the editorial director of the publishing house Virago Modern Classics, was invited by William Streatfeild, the author’s nephew, to look through her papers before they were sent to the Seven Stories museum, a center for children’s literature in Newcastle, England, where they are to be housed. (A made-for-television film of “Ballet Shoes,” starring Emma Watson, was created in 2007.) 1 It was aired by PBS in the United States on 27 December 1976. Adapted by John Wiles and directed by Timothy Combe, the series was aired in six parts on Sunday evenings. Determined to make a name for themselves, three adopted sisters living in London train for the ballet and the stage and in the process discover that each has a special talent. ![]() ![]() Her first novel, “Ballet Shoes” (1936), was a huge success and, like many of her other children’s books (“The Circus Is Coming,” “Tennis Shoes,” “White Boots,” “The Bell Family”), is still popular with young readers today. Ballet Shoes is British television adaptation of Noel Streatfeild 's novel Ballet Shoes first broadcast on BBC One in 1975. Streatfeild, who died at 90 in 1986, wrote several much-loved children’s classics, many of which drew on her own experiences of professional acting before she began to write.
